Some von Kármán vortex clouds are currently occurring in the East China Sea, just south of the Jeju Island in South Korea. These clouds form when a big, elevated barrier, like an island, mountain, or volcano, diverts a steady wind, upsetting the atmosphere's normal flow. Interesting cloud structures on this morning's visible satellite loop. It's called a Kármán vortex street, a series of vortices that propagate downwind from a wind obstruction (the terrain of Cape Mendocino in this case). Dry air from land and/or subsident flow in lee of obstruction gets trapped in circulation, forming what appears to be an “eye”.
