U.S. Sugar 148, which normal pulls the Sugar Express passenger excursion train, was re-lettered as Florida East Coast 148 for a special photo charter in April 2024. 148 is a 4-6-2 Pacific type steam locomotive built in April 1920 by the American Locomotive Company for the Florida East Coast Railway, where it served from 1920-1952. U.S. Sugar produces about 10% of all sugar harvested in the US at their plant in Clewiston, Florida on the south side of Lake Okeechobee. This is an around the clock operation during the harvest season, as sugar must be processed at the mill within 12 hours of harvest to prevent degradation. The company uses dozens of miles of railroad lines to haul harvested sugar cane from the fields to the mill.
