Potato starch at 400x magnification under polarized light. Polarized light makes the growth rings of the granules extra visible (and it creates a cool effect 😉). Each granule grows in layers, which you can see here as concentric lines. Glucose is produced in the plant during photosynthesis and serves as an energy source. A reserve supply of glucose is stored in the form of starch granules. When needed, the plant breaks the starch back down into glucose. #microscopy #sciencephotography #starch #
