All the simple sounds! The first step to reading is learning the first 5 simple sounds (mastd). Once children know these, start reading words with these sounds in (mad, sad, mat, am). Over time, children learn more simple sounds and start including these sounds when reading new words. It is so important that children learn the correct sound that letters make- this will support them to read correctly and pronounce words accurately.
