Whooping Crane Identification, All About Birds, Cornell Lab of Ornithology
The Whooping Crane is the tallest bird in North America and one of the most awe-inspiring, with its snowy white plumage, crimson cap, bugling call, and graceful courtship dance. It's also among our rarest birds and a testament to the tenacity and creativity of conservation biologists. The species declined to around 20 birds in the 1940s but ...

Love is in the air at the Species Survival Center! 💕 The whooping cranes and sandhill cranes are getting ready for chick season. All crane species mate for life, and they have several courtship behaviors that help strengthen their pair bonds throughout the year. They will do many behaviors together in sync, such as preening, foraging, threat displays and unison calling. The most elaborate behavior is their dance. The whooping and sandhill cranes begin to dance in earnest right around Valentine'

The whooping crane is one of the world’s rarest birds and is listed as endangered in the United States. Conversion of the species’ prairie and wetland habitat to farmland and unregulated hunting led to the decline of this species both in Louisiana and across the nation. In 2011, LDWF and partners began a project to return whooping cranes to the state for the first time since 1950, releasing 10 juvenile cranes into the wild at White Lake Wetlands Conservation Area. Here’s a short video of the whooping crane juveniles shortly after they were released from the top-netted pen last week! They explored the open pen for a while before a few of them took off, landing in the open marsh. All seven have remained around the pen so far. | Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries - Whooping Cranes

Audubon Species Survival Center is rearing 13 endangered whooping crane chicks! Three of these chicks are currently being reared by adults in our facility, while the other 10 are being costume-reared by our animal care experts. To reinforce the habit of the chicks keeping a healthy distance from people and to prevent them from imprinting on humans, our staff wear a white cotton crane costume. The chicks learn to eat by watching the costumed crane experts peck the ground with a fake crane head, a

Standing at an average of five feet tall, the Whooping Crane is one of the largest—and rarest—birds in North America. It flies 2,500 miles each year to winter on the Texas coast. 🔊 Stand up for the Endangered Species Act, which protects species like the Whooping Crane from going extinct: http://ow.ly/a47u30o3Q3t | National Audubon Society

It's Whooper Wednesday! Whooping cranes are wading birds, but different from many that you may be more familiar with, in that, they build their nests on the ground, actually in water! The water provides them with some safety from more land-based predators, but what about those tiny chicks when they first hatch on a nest that's surrounded by water? They swim! Whooping crane chicks are actually great swimmers and often are off the nest and taking their first short swim when they're only 1-day old!

We saw 107 Whooping Cranes today...central SK. Saskatchewan is the best place in the world to see them. In addition, we saw 4 bald eagles, Canada, Cackling and Snow Geese and a pond with Tundra Swans, one Sandhill Crane with the whoopers, and we even heard the trumpeting Whooper call. I was extremely grateful for this opportunity! ❤️ There are only around 830 of these birds in the world - in captivity and in the wild. Their comeback, after being hunted to near extinction, is slow. They only mate
